          The author loved Buddy and Charley. She trusted all her characters.

          There is only one symbol. It is a sweet potato pie.

          Sweet potato pie is the symbol of Buddy’s former life, and the love between him and his brother.

          No characters are being used as a symbol.

          The aspects of the story’s setting doesn’t seem symbolic.
